Gear

Personal Gear:

Below is a general list - mostly used if you are planning on camping on the island, working and exploring the wilderness. Always expect some rain.
  • Bill Platt's Juneau Sneakers

  • Passport -- We are traveling into Canada.
  • Dry Sack (optional) A great way to keep stuff dry while on a boat. 30 Liter dry Bag. You will keep your sleeping bag and clothes in this bag. Sealine is a great brand.
  • Sleeping Bag -- Good, warm, synthetic, 3 season sleeping bag. One that compresses well and is rated to at least 20 degrees.
  • Therma-Rest or Sleeping Pad -- Improves sleep 100%!! Will also provide insulation from the cold ground on chilly nights.
  • Rain Jacket
  • Rain Pants (optional)
  • Hiking Boots -- Mid-weight hiking boots that provide ankle support are perfect.
  • Sandals or Sneakers -- An in-camp shoe. They should be secured to your feet. Chaco’s, Keens and Teva’s are great.
  • 2-3 Pair Wool Socks - Smartwool is a great brand. Wool is still warm when wet!
  • 1-2 Pair Long underwear Bottoms -- You want one pair of long, warm pants that will be your evening “in-camp” pants. You’ll keep them in your dry-sac during the day and change into them when we get into camp. Anything but cotton. You MIGHT also want to bring one other pair of long underwear pants to wear under your tripping pants during the day in case its chilly out.
  • Tripping (Working) Pants — Zip off, synthetic pants are good. These pants you will wear during the day. They should be able to dry quickly and protect you from the elements (and bushwhacking). Carhartts or Khakis work too!
  • Shorts -- If you’re trip pants don’t zip off into shorts, you may want to bring a pair of shorts for in-camp.
  • Synthetic T-shirt
  • 1-2 Long Underwear Tops
  • Flannel Shirt or mid-weight long sleeve
  • Fleece Jacket
  • 2-3 Pair Synthetic Underwear
  • 1 Synthetic SportsBra (Ok, that’s just for girls!)
  • Wool Hat
  • Sun Hat -- Baseball, wide brimmed, visor.
  • Gloves (or Work Gloves) -- Nothing too heavy duty, wool gloves are great. Just something to keep your hands warm on cold mornings and to protect while working.
  • Nalgene Water Bottle
  • Sunglasses
  • Croakies -- or something to secure your sunglasses to your head
  • Toiletries -- Toothbrush, Chapstick (travel size) We will have group toothpaste, sunscreen, lotion, facewipes, hand sanitizer and such.
  • Bandana
  • Headlamp -- this needs to be a hands free flashlight that straps around your head. Optional and wonderful Items:
  • Book. Journal. Sammie Towel (quick drying). Camera.

  1. OK, can I just say that Christopher bought everything mentioned in my list of gear? And despite all, he was well equipped in the end, despite the super mega sized dry sack?
