Brothers Without Me

Christopher seemed overly enthusiastic when I told him I wouldn't be coming with him to help Jon close up camp. I've been going steadily for the last 10 years at the end of season to work the last few weeks in September, sometimes even creeping into October. This has always been the finest of Hull Island times for me. The island quiets, visitors are few, the animals busy readying themselves for the wet BC winter coming quick. Once Christopher started joining the end of season pilgrimage, he too was hooked. Getting that solo time with Jon is golden. And the projects would be his! So sure, I understand his eagerness. And we feel so young on the island, don't we?

Reports are scattered - quite erratic in fact. Not at all enough for those of us pining to be there. But of course that's the point. When you're on Hull Island you treasure the time, guarding each day as though the magic will slip away if you don't breathe in deeply and keep the air to yourself. The cabin report is slim. I imagine Christopher and Jon are moving rocks and focusing on "parking up" the trails. I secured a few pictures from Heidi who went up for a week in August and shared them with me.

Looks like Jon has installed a massive wood stove. Wait - there's an oven? Next level.

Obviously they are moving huge amounts of rocks, and as you can see Jon has finally created the perfect fireplace in the lower camp outside the cookhouse. The three rock fire pit taken to a new level.

And then I get a few wonderful reports from Anna Mendez (staining wood siding above in the long house) who claims she can't keep up with Chris, "he's a monster master in landscaping!" she says.

So there you have it. My report on Hull Island from the nosebleed seats back at home. Can't wait for the full report from my two brothers enjoying their time together. Without me.
